Ambush Makeover host Mary Alice Haney
and movie producer Graham Larson chose the Italian island
of Capri as the setting for their festive wedding
"For three days it felt like we were
living a dream," says
Haney. "We had great guests, food and culture. Everyone
was always smiling."
Before film producer Graham Larson ever laid eyes on his future
wife, Mary Alice Haney, he confidently scribbled it prediction
on a paper napkin: "Graham 'hearts' Mary Alice." A
mutual friend had just given Larson, now 37, a flattering description
of Haney, host of Style Network's Ambush Makeover, in hopes of
setting the two up. Larson jotted his number on the napkin and
handed it to his friend to give to Flaney.
The two were introduced seven months later, and three years after
that, Larson, who'd fallen in love just as he said he would,
surprised Haney with a trip to the romantic Post Ranch Inn in
Big Stir. During a hike along a towering cliff that overlooked
sweeps of ocean-lapped beaches. Larson dropped to one knee and
presented Haney with his great-grandmother's 6.5-carat cushion-cut
diamond ring. (An acrophobe, Haney had to be coaxed into climbing
the cliff; suddenly she had a new reason to catch her breath.)
It was as scenic an engagement as you could imagine. But Haney,
whose TV role transforming real-life ugly ducklings into swans
means she's up for a challenge, decided to do her fiancé one
better. To find a location for the nuptials, she traveled to
such far-flung locales as St. Barts and Anguilla. Ultimately
the couple decided on the Italian island of Capri, where two
of Haney's younger sisters had wed. "It's the most beautiful
place you will ever see in your life," says Haney.
To help orchestrate the festivities for the 150 guests, the pair
turned to local wedding planner Gianni Chervatin and veteran
mother-of-the-bride Emmy Haney. They arranged three days of events,
including a boat cruise around the island with swimming near
the famed Blue Grotto, a rehearsal dinner at the lido del Faro
restaurant that ended in a surprise fireworks show, and nightly
jaunts to Numero Due, a neighborhood disco.
On Saturday night, May 28, 2005, after saying "I do," the
couple walked through the narrow streets of Capri joined by an
Italian band, singers and dancers, while passersby cheered and
store owners showered them with fresh flowers. The last stop
was the Grand Hotel Quisisana, where guests enjoyed caprese salad,
sea bass carpaccio, ravioli and chocolate wedding cake. They
also danced to the eight-piece band flown in from New York City,
which pumped out such disco hits as "We Are Family," a
Haney clan favorite. And speaking of nostalgia, what became of
that napkin? In an ambush of her own, Larson's stepmother made
duplicates of the memento and gave them to guests at the rehearsal
dinner.
